Tyhjä (empty, vacant) + -yys (abstract noun suffix, equivalent to English -ness). Emptiness. Void. Finnish carries no religious weight in this word — it means simply what is not there, a physical absence rather than a philosophical condition. The deepest background. The panel before any signal arrives.

Warm void. Lämmin = warm. The same emptiness as tyhjyys but with an amber undertone barely visible — two counts of red above the base. The CRT ground when the phosphor is at rest, the glass still holding heat from the previous session. You only notice the warmth after you have seen the cold version.

Chasm, gorge, abyss — a physical gap in the earth, not a philosophical one. The word feels geological. Kuilu is the step above tyhjyys: still dark, still void, but there is now a surface. Card backgrounds, panel-on-panel. Something you can place a component on.

Deep chasm. Syvä = deep. One step further into the rock than kuilu. Inset surfaces, recessed displays, the inside of a well. Where things go that should feel lower than the panel.

Finnish adjective: bleak, dreary, desolate, forlorn. The specific quality of a place that is empty in a way that makes you feel the emptiness — not threatening, just present, announcing itself through absence. Not the void. The mood of the void. Overlay surfaces, modal grounds.

Shadow — specifically the shadow cast by a specific object. Not darkness itself; darkness is tyhjyys. Varjo is what happens when something is between you and the light. The shadow is evidence of the light. Primary rule and divider colour.

Warm shadow. The same shadow as varjo, but the light source is amber. The Lada dashboard at dusk. The divider between components when the panel is running warm.

Deep twilight. Hämärä names the specific quality of light at dusk or before dawn — neither dark nor lit, the passage between, when objects lose their edges. It also means vague, unclear, morally ambiguous. Syvä = deep. The heavy border, the line that defines the chassis.

Twilight. The canonical hämärä. Standard border colour throughout the system — the line between surfaces, the seam between panels, the boundary of a knob track. Present everywhere, calling for attention nowhere.

Amber coal. Hiili = coal, carbon, charcoal. Baltic amber reduced to its mineral origin — the organic warmth almost extinguished, just enough remaining to remember it was once resin. The knob track at full rest, unfilled, the ring before any value arrives.

Matte amber. Matta = matte, flat, without sheen. The amber before it catches the light — the surface of a piece of raw amber not yet polished, not yet translucent. Track fill for values below midpoint. The signal present but not yet alive.

Dim amber. A palette-vocabulary hybrid: meripihka (Baltic amber) + English dim, chosen because Finnish has no single adjective meaning "reduced luminosity without implication of quality loss." The signal readable but not calling for attention. Secondary labels, subheadings.

Baltic amber. Meri = sea; pihka = tree resin, sap. The fossilized resin of Eocene conifers, deposited in what is now the Baltic seabed, eroded out over millennia, washed ashore on the coasts of Lithuania and Prussia, gathered and traded across Bronze Age Europe for five thousand years before the concept of trade had a word. It is literally petrified light — photosynthate captured by a living tree fifty million years before anything like us existed, held in suspension, released when you hold it to the lamp. The canonical signal colour. Knob value at nominal. The alive thing in the void.

Glow, incandescence. Hehkua (verb) = to glow with inner heat, to be incandescent — not a flash, not a spark, sustained heat from within. A kiln element. A resistor near its thermal limit. The thing that gives off warmth without a flame you can point to. Knob hover state. The colour that tells you something is about to be changed.

Spark. The momentary event of electricity jumping between two conductors — the arc, the flash, the instant of crossing the gap. Not sustained like hehku. Selection highlight. Peak value indicator. The instant before you release the key.

Deciduous grove, glade. Specifically a mixed grove that lets light through — varied species, undergrowth, the smell of something living and damp. Not kuusi (spruce forest, dark, dense, conifer-silent). Lehto is the friendly forest. Primary display text in fosfori mode. What the screen says when it has something to say.

Bright grove. Kirkas = bright, clear, vivid, unobscured. P39 phosphor — zinc orthosilicate — peaks at 525nm. This is that colour. The canonical phosphor emission. What the VT100 looked like in 1978 in a dark room when the tube was new. The heading text on the kaiku display.

Moss. Bryophyte — the small, soft plant that grows on the north side of rocks, on fallen logs, on the forest floor in places that stay damp. Never loud. Always present underfoot in the Finnish forest after the snow melts. Muted display text. What the screen says when it is reporting something routine.

Bright moss. After rain. The same moss as sammal but the water has brought it up — the colour intensifies when it is wet. Subdued display text that can still be read without effort. Secondary readout values, the parameters not currently being edited.

Bright aspen. Haapa = the European aspen, Populus tremula. The Latin says it trembles; Finnish speakers knew this before they had Latin. The leaves move in any breath of air — always in motion, always catching light — and the Finnish word carries that motion inside it. The pale shimmer above the main display text: headings, the value currently being changed, the field that has focus.

Trabant Mintgrün. The factory paint specification for the Sachsenring Trabant 601 in mint green — a pigment mixed at Zwickau to a specific production standard and applied to Duroplast body panels for a specific production window. This is not "mint" in the abstract. It is the specific tone of a specific car from a specific country that no longer exists. Link colour in fosfori mode.

Mint. Minttu is a Finnish loanword from Swedish mynta, from Latin mentha, from Greek míntha — possibly pre-Greek, the plant predating the word by a long distance. Ivory. Norsu = elephant; luu = bone. Finnish names materials by what they come from — not a polite euphemism, just the compound noun for the material. Primary body text throughout the system. Parameter labels. The text that is simply there to be read, making no claim beyond legibility.

Sand. Specifically beach sand — hiekkaranta is a sandy beach, hiekkamaa is sandy soil. Worn down from granite and quartz by glaciers and water over ten thousand years, becoming the floor of Baltic shores. Captions, subdued labels, the parameter name that is there when you look for it but does not press itself on you when you are not.

Ash. The residue after fire — what is left when the fuel is spent and the heat has moved on. Palaa tuhkaksi: burns to ash. Complete transformation into something that no longer burns. Disabled text. The label that is present but cannot be reached.

Lake. One of approximately 188,000 in Finland. The word is simple, definite, and unmetaphorical — Finns do not romanticize what they grew up surrounded by. Every Finnish child learned to swim in a järvi. Primary link colour throughout the KAAMOS system: the one cool note in a warm universe, unmistakable against the amber and void, its temperature doing the work of underlining.

Sky — and also heaven; Finnish uses one word for both. The sky you look up at and the destination share a noun. Taivas is the exact colour of Trabant Hellblau — the factory specification for the pale sky-blue finish applied to the Trabant 601. The palest tone in the cool register. The distance light travels through clear air on a day that knows it is temporary.
